Risk Identification
Software development organizations typically have confined quality assurance to software testing. This approach that occurs during the software development life cycle, no matter how much you shift left, is still a strategy of quality assurance that is near the end of the product life cycle. I proposed to first change our mindset on the role of the Quality Assurance Engineer. The primary role of Quality Assurance is risk identification, not software testing. Next, let’s expand the role of Quality Assurance into three key areas of risk identification,
Enterprise Quality Assurance
Enterprise Quality Assurance is developing a quality assurance model that enforces quality by improving documentation, processes, capabilities, standards, automation, tools, individual skill sets, and team morale in every aspect of the company. Including but not limited to human resources, recruiting, legal, senior strategic leadership, career development, training, organizational communication, project management, project delivery, software development, testing, metric analysis, and so much more. Creating the understanding that the quality of everything we set to achieve in our day-to-day operations is what makes quality a focus and not an afterthought.
Project Quality Assurance
Project Quality Assurance is executed by identifying risk in the following areas:
Software Quality Assurance
Traditional Software Quality Assurance is achieved by identifying risk through planning, execution, and analysis. By developing a Quality Assurance Framework that consists of techniques, capabilities, processes, strategies, standards, and tools, we are able to infuse quality in our software.
By utilizing the same principles of risk identification at the enterprise and project levels that we traditionally use at the software level, the quality of the application starts with the organization, the people, the processes, standards, and capabilities of every person at the company, not just an individual test team.
